Family Faith and Fun Fridays: Just Do It!

|
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays! As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the activity, please don’t hesitate to comment.

 Scripture Memory: Just Do It!

Back in my days of teacher training, the buzz word in many of my major classes was “learning styles.” While it doesn’t take an education degree to figure this out, every child learns in a different way. Some kids learn most easily with visual aids, others learn better with hands-on activities; still others retain information best by simply hearing it. Some excel in a team setting, while others do better alone. Some retain knowledge longest when they have an emotional tie to the content, while others process information best through problem solving.

Thankfully, God has created ALL CHILDREN to learn. That being said, with a clan as vast and numerous as the faces around my dinner table, I try to encourage my own children to memorize scripture in different ways. At night, I speak verses over each child as I pray. Therefore, my kids hear the word of God. In our kitchen, I post verses with pictures and graphics. At times, we gather around the television and watch the Visual Bible. Consequently, my kids see the word of God. But my favorite style of scripture memory is “the Nike way.”

Quite simply, we just do it!

That’s why on the Fourth of July, I tied my children’s hands behind their backs as they took their customary seat at the breakfast table. Then I placed a festive red-white-and-blue pancake on their plates and invited them to enjoy their meal.

Joshua immediately plopped his whole face into the pancake and tried to chew. Lizzy followed suit, collecting red-white-and-blue food bits in her uncombed mop of hair. And Luke attempted to break the ropes that inhibited his dining.

Before our patriotic breakfast grew cold, I informed the kids that the truth would set them free. I directed their eyes to the new Bible verse on our “wall window” and I held up a scissors to entice their cooperation. As my children spoke aloud Christ’s proclamation in John 8:32, I snipped the cords that had held them in breakfast bondage.

The next time we sat down at the table, Hannah eyed her food and eyed me with suspicion. Before I could assure her that the ropes had been returned to the garage, my freedom-seeker hollered those words freshly imprinted on her heart, “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free!” Now that’s the sign of a FAST LEARNER!

If you want to help your kids hide some truth in their hearts this weekend, grab some string, set the table with an enticing meal, and invite your offspring to memorize a verse that they won’t soon forget. After all, the ones who most appreciate freedom are those who have tasted bondage!

  1. * Describe the organization’s change management system and how you
personally feel about this system. When it comes to finding the best stage
manufacturing company, there are hundreds of companies manufacturing this type of
staging systems all over the world. For control, a well-designed graphic interface
and the ability to configure complex events (data capture, notification, and scripting) enhance an administrator’s ability to manage multiple devices and minimize down time.
