Simplicity

|
Not long ago I ran across a poem I’d scribbled years ago in the margin of a Bible study.  This summer, when I picked the study up once again, I was moved to tears by these words–not because the words themselves are beautiful, but because the cry of my heart hasn’t changed since the day I penned them  in smudged red ink on the pages of my lesson book.  Back then, I was a young mommy with my third child tucked safely beneath my heart and I longed for soul simplicity. Today, I’m a nearing-forty-mama with five kids crammed chaotically beneath my roof and I still long for the same thing. Perhaps you do, too…

                   Simplicity

Open my eyes, Lord; help me to see
Through lenses of eternity.
Give me a glimpse from your kingdom view.
Show me exactly what matters to you.

Fix my mind on things above.
Fill me with passion for all that you love.
Turn my heart towards heavenly treasure.
Align my ambitions with your perfect measure.

Quench my hunger for things of this earth.
Show me investments of eternal worth.
Slow my feet when I long to chase
Trophies that fade at the end of life’s race.

Empty my hands so I’m free to receive
The gifts you have planned for those who believe.
Reduce my life to one simple goal:
To love you with all of my heart, mind and soul.

Then when the day comes that you welcome me home,
May I fall unabashed at the foot of your throne,
And hear you proclaim with undisguised pleasure,
“One thing was needed. And you chose the better!”
