God’s Best Things

“Mommy, mommy, can I keep him?” Hannah begged as she dangled a muddy earthworm in front of me.  “I want to show him to my class tomorrow!”
I stared at the ugly creature and then at my daughter’s beaming face and I marveled at her joy. Later that night, after the little worm had been securely tucked into a cool whip container “bed” with cozy dirt covers, Hannah asked me to pray that her new-found pet would survive until morning. “I just want to share him with my class, Mom. The kids will know God’s SO COOL when they see my little worm.” My wonder-struck girl sighed with satisfaction. “God just makes the BEST things!”

I took one more peek at the slithering creature beneath the plastic lid and wished I were as awestruck as my daughter.

In his book, A Chance at Childhood Again, Alan D. Wright suggests,

“Little children live in a state of wonder. Have you ever seen a baby girl who has just discovered her hands? Have you ever watched a toddler blow a bubble or inspect a strange bug? Have you ever stepped into an autumn night’s air and heard your little boy say, ‘Look, Daddy, look! There’s the moon up there!’? Have you ever noticed a child’s glee to see a kite dance in the wind over a beach? It’s not the activity itself that brings such joy; it’s the wonder that accompanies it. Adults haven’t lost the ability to look at their hands, inspect bugs, spy the moon or fly a kite. Grownups have lost the wonder that once accompanied such simple things.”

Today, I’m asking God to help me celebrate His BEST THINGS with an extra dose of childlike wonder! In fact, I may even dig in the dirt a bit… if I can convince Joshua to pick up any worms I might find!

Today’s Treasure:  You are the God of great wonders!
