Family Faith and Fun Fridays: Soaking in God’s Word AGAIN

|
For the word of God is alive and powerful.

It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword,
cutting between soul and spirit,
between joint and marrow.
It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays. As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the suggested activity, please don’t hesitate to post a comment. Enjoy!

When I glance back at all the “teachable moments” God ordained over the summer, I recognize a dominant theme- God’s Word.  I guess this mommy’s passion cannot be disguised. I want my kids to LOVE the word of God.  I want them to know the THRILL of hearing God speak to their hearts as they open the Bible and discover it was written just for them. I want them to MARVEL at the way the Holy Spirit can apply divinely-inspired words scripted centuries ago to their life TODAY. I want them to know the power that comes with the promise God makes in Isaiah 55:10-12

As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

And so, until I breath my last breath, I will continue to share my love for God’s Word with my children (and anyone else who will listen!).  I love to provide visuals for my kids to see how spending time in the Word impacts our lives.  Because God’s Word is ALIVE, it has the power to transorm us. Quite simply, the more time we spend in the Word, the more we grow to look like Jesus.

Last month, I set two sticks of celery into separate vases filled with tap water. To one vase we added a dozen drops of blue food coloring. We left the other alone. I told the kids that the colored water represented God’s Word. Specifically, the bright blue hue stood for Jesus, the LIVING WORD.

Then we watched to see what would happen. After just one day the tips of the leaves on the celery stick soaking in the colored water began to take on a blue tinge. The stick in the plain water looked the same. The next day the entire breadth of the leaves appeared blue. The longer the celery stick soaked in the colored water, the more brilliant blue it became.  No matter how much time passed, the other celery stick remained dull green.

My kids didn’t even need me to draw conclusions for them. “Look what happens when we spend time in God’s Word,” Lizzy told a friend who had stopped by for a play date and was staring inquisitively at our strange celery centerpiece on the kitchen table. We just start looking like Jesus!”

May we all be tranformed by the Holy Word.
