Tuesday’s Tips: Beautiful Butterflies

|
Welcome to Tuesday’s Tips,  a weekly IDEA SWAP for moms. I hope that when you drop by The Overflow on Tuesdays, you’ll find a gold-mine of encouragement and creative ideas excavated straight from the sticky trenches of parenthood.

Of course a SWAP wouldn’t be a true exchange without many voices. So, please consider chiming in the discussion and sharing your own great ideas.  If you’ve discovered a tried and true trip that has made motherhood a little easier, a little more exciting, or a bit more meaningful, please let me know. Just leave a comment after this post or send me an email (rbruxvoort@iowatelecom.net) so I can share your idea in the next swap!  I’d love to feature you  on an upcoming Tuesday. Let the digging begin!

Beautiful Butterflies

I defaulted to one of my all time favorite crafts for Maggie’s butterfly birthday party and was reminded again how sometimes the simplest activities are the most fun. (I remember making these little butterflies in preschool myself. This idea must be as timeless as a hot cup of coffee!) If you’ve never thought of those coffee filters as something more than a part of your morning java routine, consider using using a few of them to add a colorful touch of spring  liners to your home this week.

Here’s how…

1.  Have your child color the entire coffee filter with washable markers. The less white space the better.

2.  Then, use a spray bottle to lightly spritz the filter with water. Don’t soak the filter. Think dew drops, not down pour.

3. Watch as the colors begin to bleed and blend. This process will take several minutes.

4.  Wrap a pipe cleaner around the middle of the filter and twist it into two antennae.

5. The sides of the filter should look like wings. You may need to pull the wings out a bit to obtain the correct shape.

6. Hang your beautiful butterflies from the ceiling, dangle them from streamers on doorways, or put them on a stick and create a puppet play. Dream of spring 🙂

  1. Any other great craft ideas with those filters? My friend Jill just reminded me that coffee filters are great for making snow flakes- they cut so much easier than paper and naturally create a more shapely flake. We’ve got so much snow outside our windows today that we may need to create some flakes inside, too. The kind that don’t melt 🙂

  2. I don’t drink coffee…but I do have a bunch of coffee filters…because I love them for kid crafts!:) These butterflies are adorable! I Love them!
