Spa for the Soul

| |

When my husband was in medical school and our budget involved endless cans of tuna and peanut butter, I drove by a high-end spa each week on my trek to the grocery store. Since the only manicure I’d ever recieved was on my wedding day, I knew very little about what went on beyond the walls of that beauty shop. But sometimes as I passed by in my spit-up-stained sweatpants and baseball-cap-covered hair, I dreamed of beauty treatments that erased the black circles of sleep-deprivation and manicures that excavated sandbox residue from trench-digging fingernails.

When I mentioned my musings to an older friend one day, the wise widow replied, “Honey, the best kind of spa I know is free. If you pamper your soul, you’ll be beautiful for all your days.”

It’s been a decade since I’ve seen the woman whose sage advice changed my life. But when I run into her in Heaven, I’m going to thank her. Shortly after she shared her recipe for beauty, I began to investigate the spa sitting on my bookshelf.  Just as my friend promised, the Word of God has infused my life with radiance. I’ve yet to find a product that lifts the black bags from my eyes, but when  I lift my eyes to my Maker, He enables me to see past weariness to wonder. I still have sand stuck beneath my nails on occasion, but the hands who took my nails on Calvary’s cross paint my life with the unfading beauty of grace. I may wage war on wrinkles, bunyans and pimples but the battle for my heart has already been won.
My budget has a bit more wiggle room these days, so now and then I actually visit a spa like the one I used to pass on my way to the grocery store. I pull my calloused feet out of my tennis shoes and indulge in a pedicure complete with bubbling foot bath and massaging chair.  But truth be told, if I have to choose, I’d rather climb into my big leather chair, turn the well-worn pages of my Bible and indulge in a FREE spa for my dirty soul.  After all, why settle for glamour when my Savior offers GLORY?

Today’s Overflow:  Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. -Psalm 34:5
