What a Wife can Learn from a Pitcher of Lemonade

| |

I was digging in an out-of-the-way cupboard for a gravy boat not long ago. I didn’t find it, of course.  It must have sailed away when I wasn’t looking. (Probably got tired of waiting for me to realize that I don’t have to serve my store-bought gravy out of a coffee cup when I’ve got a cute little porcelain boat floating in the cupboard).

But I did re-discover a beautiful glass pitcher that someone had given me at a bridal shower nearly twenty years ago.  I remember that the giver had tucked a recipe for homemade lemonade inside the elegant looking glass, and when I’d opened the gift, I’d imagined myself serving my husband on a sultry evening from that lovely thing.

Truth be told, I’ve never once whipped up a batch of fresh-squeezed lemonade and served it from my elegant pitcher, but I have stirred up plenty of Country Time and filled countless plastic cups on hot summer days. I’m adding fresh-squeezed lemonade to my list of summer dreams and I’ll do my best to lure my husband out beneath the stars for a sip or two when the kids are tucked in bed.

Until then, I’ll keep applying the timeless lessons I’ve learned from that little wedding gift in my cupboard. Because the longer I’m married, the more I believe that a good wife is like that beautiful pitcher.

For any wife who has ever felt empty and dry…

I am… being poured out like a drink offering…-2 Timothy 4:6

You are the pitcher.  Pour often.  Give more than you think you can,
and never stop to measure how much you are receiving in return.

He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed–Proverbs 11:25

Do not forget the secret of the pitcher: It cannot give that with which it is not filled.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. –Psalm 42:2

Fill often with Living Water.

Come to me all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Isaiah 55: 1, 2

Meet Jesus daily at the wellspring and your husband will delight in the over-flow.

Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling
up to eternal life. John 4:14

    May your cup spill over.

Blessings today from one humble pitcher to another!
