The Saturday Soak

|
Welcome to the Saturday Soak

I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.
Psalm 119:15-16

I don’t take long lingering baths too often (I usually get plenty soaked during my kids’ clean-up routines), but I DO love to soak in God’s Word. I love to let a few verses just linger in my mind like I used to linger in the tub in those pre-kid days of life. Valerie E. Hess and Marti Watson Garlett, authors of Habits of a Child’s Heart: Raising Your Kids with the Spiritual Disciplines compare the discipline of meditation to the concept of SOAKING. “Meditation teaches us to become like tea bags, soaking deeply and quietly in God and his Word so that we can better hear him speak to our hearts and minds.”

If you’re looking for a refreshing soak this Memorial Day weekend, take a dip in God’s Word and consider what the following verses mean to you.

Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD.Why are you downcast, O my soul?

                                            -Psalm 25:7

Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
 Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.
Psalm 42:5-7

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through
the watches of the night.
Psalm 63:6
