Taste the Kindness of God

|
For the word of God is alive and powerful.

It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword,
cutting between soul and spirit,
between joint and marrow.
It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays. As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the suggested activity, please don’t hesitate to post a comment. Enjoy!

                                                  Taste the Kindness of God
 Read: Psalm 34

Prepare: Read Psalm 34 and jot down examples of God’s kindness listed in this psalm of praise. (For example, verse 4 says He answers prayers; verse 6 says He listens; verse 7 says He protects us…). Pray that your children will know the kindness of God.

What you need: *A variety of chocolate candy with filling inside-2 chocolates/family member
                            *A Bible

What to do: Set out the plate of chocolates and invite your children to look at them. Ask your children to tell you about the chocolate without tasting or touching it. (May talk about the size, the smell, the color). Next ask, “What is inside these treats?” Accept guesses, and then discuss how you can’t know for sure what is inside the chocolate without picking it up, holding it, and then tasting it.

Read Psalm 34:8 together and explain that God is like that chocolate. We can’t really know what’s inside of His heart if we don’t get close to Him. He wants us to experience or TASTE His kindness and goodness. How can we “taste” God; in other words, what can we do to experience His heart? (Read His word, pray, look for Jesus at work in the world around us, etc.) If it is age appropriate, read the whole Psalm and invite your children to point out what they learn about God’s kindness, just as you did in the preparation phase.

Wrapping it Up: End by offering each child a chocolate and encourage him/her to discover what is inside the special treat. Invite them to hold it, smell it, and taste it! Ask, “now that you’ve tasted the chocolate, would you like to give one to a friend?” Discuss how once we “taste” the kindness of God; we want to share Him with others. Give each family member another chocolate to share with someone.

Conclude with a family prayer- Thank God for inviting us to know His heart. Ask the Lord to nudge your family to “experience Him” more so you can better understand his kindness and pass it on to others.
