pennies

Last month, I shared a story from Annie Dillard’s book Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,  Dillard writes about hiding pennies as a youngster for someone else to find:

I would cradle (a penny)at the roots of a sycamore, say, or in a hole left by a chipped-off piece of sidewalk. Then I would take a piece of chalk and, starting at either end of the block, draw huge arrows leading up to the penny from both directions. After I learned to write, I labeled the arrows: SURPRISE AHEAD or MONEY THIS WAY. I was greatly excited during all this arrow- drawing at the thought of the first lucky passer-by… The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But-and this is the point- who gets excited by a mere penny?…If you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days.

As I develop the daily habit of looking for pennies, I’m finding that a penny in my pocket puts praise on my lips.

Here are a few of my recent finds:

  • Baby belly laughs
  • Old-fashioned merry-go-rounds

  • Snow Cones (and sisters who share them)

  • The sound of a stone plunking in the water; and the quiet ripples that follow

  • Teeter Totters!
  • Growing Green Grass (and the handsome guys that mow it!)

  • Homemade chocolate chip cookies on a rainy day

  • Trees- all kinds, all colors, all shapes and sizes. They remind me to sink deep roots in Christ and point to Heaven!

  •  Tulips (and the sweet Dutch babies who pick them!)

How about you? Are there any pennies in the pocket of your heart this week? Post your favorite praise and we’ll count our coins together today! Have a happy weekend.

Today’s Treasure: I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. -Psalm 34:1

  2. Oh! I love the lure of the piano. Most of the music at our house is a mix of pounding and plinking, but I figure the Lord just says to make a joyful noise and we’ve got that covered!

Thanks for sharing your pennies 🙂

  3. my favorite praises for today: kids who gave their best efforts for achievement tests, and a budding piano player who can hardly resist touching the keys whenever she walks by the piano.
