Homesick
“Did you have fun at Grandma’s?” I’d asked Joshua when I returned from my roadtrip last night.
“Yeah,” he smiled. Then, flung his little arms around my neck. “But I always want to be HOME with you.”
Without a doubt, Joshua’s overnight at Grandma’s had been packed with delights: park play and yummy snacks, tractor rides and time in Grandpa’s workshop. The sleep-over was marked by all the elements of toddler heaven. But despite the fun, my littlest boy longed for home. And His longing reminds me that even the BEST MOMENTS in this world can’t erase our soul’s ache for HOME.
C.S. Lewis said it best:
The settled happiness and security which we all desire, God witholds from us by the very nature of the world: but joy, pleasure, and merriment, He has scattered broadcast. We are never safe, but we have plenty of fun and some ecstasy. It is not hard to see why. the security we crave would teach us to rest our hearts in this world and oppose an obstacle to our return to God. A few moments of happy love, a landscape, a symphony, a merry meeting with our friends, a bathe or a football match have no such tendancy. Our Father refreshes us on the journey wiht some pleasant inns, but will not encourage us to mistake them for home.
Oh, how I pray that, like Joshua, my children will keep longing for their rightful home. May they enjoy the merriments of earth, but always ALWAYS be HOMESICK for the majesty of HEAVEN!
Today’s Treasure: There is more than enough room in my Father’s home… When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. -John 14:2-3
