Family Faith and Fun Fridays: Sticking With Jesus

|
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays! As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the activity, please don’t hesitate to comment. Enjoy!

Sticking With Jesus

I’m always looking for ways to help the kids understand the benefits of spending time with Jesus. This simple dinner-table “exhibit” provided an effective picture of why we are wise to stick with our Savior. (The original idea for this activity came from Barbara and Dennis Rainey’s Passport to Purity curriculum. I just modified the discussion to better fit my desired teaching point.)

Here’s what to do:

1.  Take two pieces of different colored construction paper and show them to your family. Point out that one page is completely blue while the other is completely red (or whatever colors you’ve chosen).

2.  Then invite your child to glue the two pieces of paper together.

3.  Let the paper sit for a few minutes. (We just left ours sitting on the table through an entire dinner hour).

4.  Once the glue has dried, ask your child to try to pull the paper apart again.
Note what happens.

5.  Ask: Have you ever noticed that whomever we spend time with “rubs off” on us little by little. Give some examples of habits you’ve picked up from your spouse or mannerisms you’ve learned from your friends or words or phrases your kids have picked up from people they’ve spent time with.

6.  Then discuss: So, if someone we spend time with rubs off on our life, what kind of people do you want to spend time with? What kind of habits do you want to rub off on you?

7.   Think about these papers again. What might happen to you if you spent time with Jesus- by reading the Bible, praying, praising, worshipping? (He will rub off on you!) What pieces of Jesus would you like to rub off on you? What can you do this week to spend some time with your Savior?

The Overflow: And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.
-2 Corinthians 3:17-18

  2. Okay this is a fantastic post with results!
My favorite part is that it is easy to do..for those days when I need a lesson…and I’m lacking in time!
    I love it!
    Thanks!
