Family Faith and Fun Friday: How To Let Your Praises Fly

|
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays! As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the activity, please don’t hesitate to comment. Enjoy!

Ascension Day Love Letters

Yesterday was Ascension Day on the Christian calendar. Since we’ve been extending our Easter celebration for the past forty days,  I wanted to celebrate our official “end of Easter”  with a bit of RISING GRATITUDE.

I bought a plain-colored helium balloon for every kid in the family and invited each one to  send a token of thanks to Heaven.

To help the kids understand what this little known holy day is about, we read the gospel account of  what happened on that day long ago when Jesus returned to Paradise.

Jesus led his disciples out to the area near Bethany. Then he lifted up his hands and blessed them.  While he was blessing them, he left them. He was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him. With great joy, they returned to Jerusalem.  Every day they went to the temple, praising God. Luke 24:50-52.

We talked about why Jesus’ return to Heaven mattered to us today.

Here were a few of our ideas…

*Since Jesus returned to Heaven, He’s left the Holy Spirit on earth.
*Now He reigns and intercedes for us at His Father’s right hand.
*He is preparing a place for us so we can join Him someday.

I suggested that we follow the example of those first disciples and do a little praising ourselves. I handed the kids all Sharpies and they wrote a note to Jesus on their balloon.

Then we let loose our praises and watched them rise to Heaven!

It’s a great weekend to celebrate Ascension Day with your family!
