Camp Rainbow

My firstborn was packing his duffle bag for church camp on Sunday night when Joshua walked into the room and asked,

“Where are you going?”

“To  church camp.”

“Like Hannah?” Joshua asked, remembering his big sister’s good-byes just over a week ago.

“Yeah, but I get to stay even longer,” Luke replied.

“Can I go with you?” little brother asked, green eyes hopeful.

“No, buddy. You’re too small. When you’re bigger you can come, too.”

That night, when I tucked my littlest boy into bed, he asked, “Why can’t I go to camp, too, Mommy? I’m not too little to learn about God!”

“Of course you’re not,” I assured Josh. “You don’t have to be at camp to learn about God. You can learn about Him anywhere.”

“I know,” my sleepy boy murmured, “I just really want to meet Jesus at camp someday.”

The next morning before my camp wanna-be awoke, I
made a cheerful sign and hung it on the window.

“Welcome to Camp Rainbow!Where Every Day Is Colored With Joy!’

I greeted my littlest boy with a big smile and invited him to design his own rainbow-colored pancake for breakfast.

As he and his fellow campers ate their breakfast creations, we read the story of Noah and learned about God’s “Rainbow Promise.”

Lizzy and her friend, Hannah, agreed to be our delegated Camp Rainbow counselors.

With great flair, they turned our little “home campers” bodies into artistic masterpieces. Next, we moved the color to the driveway and turned our bland easel of concrete into a grand tribute to color and creativity.

The fun continued as we designed our own caps, colored some Shrinky Dinks and strung together vibrant jewelry. We concluded our camp with multi-colored snow cones and a round of applause at the Master Artist’s unparalleled work: a blazing orange and pink sunset.

When I kissed my smallest boy good-night at the day’s end, he snuggled his soft brown hair against my neck and whispered,

“Mommy, I don’t think I need to go to Luke’s camp when I’m bigger. I’ll just stay at Camp Rainbow until I’m all growed up!”

Maybe you can beat the heat this week with a camp of your own creation. After all, sometimes the best place to meet Jesus is right in your own home!

The Overflow:  “God continued, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and everything living around you and everyone living after you. I’m putting my rainbow in the clouds, a sign of the covenant between me and the Earth. From now on, when I form a cloud over the Earth and the rainbow appears in the cloud, I’ll remember my covenant between me and you and everything living, that never again will floodwaters destroy all life. When the rainbow appears in the cloud, I’ll see it and remember the eternal covenant between God and everything living, every last living creature on Earth.” -Genesis 9:12
