Tuesday’s Tips: Scratch and Sniff Painting

|

I’m so glad you stopped by today for Tuesday’s Tips. I hope that as you peruse this weekly IDEA SWAPfor moms, you’ll find a gold-mine of encouragement and treasure trove of creative ideas excavated straight from the sticky trenches of parenthood.

Of course a SWAP wouldn’t be a true exchange without many voices. So, please consider chiming in the discussion and sharing your own great ideas. If you’ve discovered a tried and true trip that has made motherhood a little easier, a little more exciting, or a bit more meaningful, please let me know.

Just leave a comment after this post or send me an email (rbruxvoort@iowatelecom.net) so I can share your idea in the next swap! I’d love to feature you on an upcoming Tuesday. Let the digging begin!

Scratch and Sniff Paint

Today our craft room smelled like a cool sip of refreshment on a hot summer’s day, thanks to this marvelous idea from my friend Jill.

If you need a new and fragrant twist on the old preschool paint project, try creating your own paints from powdered drink mix or Jello.

We just used the colors we had in our cupboards, but if we do this again, I’m going to buy a rainbow of options. At a mere 20 cents/drink packet, I think this homemade paint is far more economical than Crayola’s washable finger paint.

To make the paint, we just sprinkled the drink powder into a bowl and added a splattering of water, enough to create the paint consistency that we wanted. We used very little water for finger painting (the thicker consistency worked well for Maggie’s little hands), but we added a bit more water when we brought out the paintbrushes.

The drink mix created bolder colors, but the Jello maintained a grainy texture that Maggie defined as “sparkly.” It looked like it had a bit of glitter in the mix, so my shimmer-prone girl liked the Jello paint best.

Josh just couldn’t get enough of the fruity fragrance. He spent more time smelling the paint than creating with it!

All in all, the inventive paints created some sweet smelling masterpieces!

Go ahead and dig in your kitchen today. Who knows how many boxes of Jello you’ll find hibernating in the far corners of your pantry. Or what flavors of drink mixes you’ve stashed away since summer.
You might have everything you need to create a fragrant masterpiece!

  1. My only warning: it smells good enough to drink 🙂 I caught Maggie sipping the “paint’ and suggested we just mix up a pitcher of lemonade instead ! Would love to see those happy pictures your kids create when you pull out the jello 🙂

  2. I love all paint…especially paint that can be washed…and smells good! This is a great activity! My kiddos will love it!
