Thursday’s Jewels

| |

I love it when I stumble upon words that quietly take up residence in my soul: a quote worth sharing, a question worth asking, a prayer worth repeating. I love it when someone’s reverent musings lift my thoughts above dirty diapers, dirty dishes and dirty laundry. I feel grateful when someone else’s words chase me shamelessly to the Living Word. As the wise writer of Proverbs declares, “The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry…”
(Proverbs 34:11).

I’m digging in someone else’s jewlery box (or diaper pail) today. I think you’ll enjoy the poignant pearls of truth that accessorize this post. . If you’ve found the “right word at the right time” this week, feel free to open up your box of jewels and share it here. I’d love to pick it up, polish it off and enjoy its beauty, too!

I remember reading Angela Thomas’s beautiful book Tender Mercies for a Mother’s Soul years ago, and weeping because I’d  finally “met” a friend who put my heart’s cry into words. She understood the longings of my mommy heart and she understood my need to do more than merely survive the diaper pail drudgeries. She gave me hope when I couldn’t see beyond my own sticky floors and disappointment.  May her tender reminder that God KNOWS your life move you from weariness to wonder today!

“In Jesus, we don’t have to be numb just to survive. We can welcome our lives, appreciate the variety, and savor the moments that fill our days.  Our dear Father wants us to know the great fun and blessings of motherhood. He wants us to really enjoy living from the strength of his fullness. He will come, not as a little drizzle, mind you, but like a torrential downpour, sweeping us up into His arms of refuge and pleasure. He wants us to delight in the truth of John 10:10–‘I have come so you can really live.'” (page 52, Tender Mercies for a Mother’s Soul ).

“By the real grace of Jesus, I came to understand that God knows my life.  He knows the demands of “be fruitful and multiply.”  He knows the energy level it takes to care for a family and manage a home.  He oversees homework and goes to basketball games.  He is not frustrated by my commitment to care for the ones He has entrusted to me.  He is not angry that I am up all night with a new baby or a sick child and too exhausted to read my Bible.  He understands our season completely, and I know that He gives grace to mothers in abundance.” (page 82, Tender Mercies for a Mother’s Soul ).
