Family Faith and Fun Fridays: Prayer Prompts

| |
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.  -Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays! As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the activity, please don’t hesitate to comment.

Talking to God:  A Cup of Conversation

Sometimes our meal-time prayers just need a boost. When Joshua’s best attempt at talking to God turns into a hurried one liner night after night: “Thanks for EVERYTHING ‘cept evil” – then I know it’s time to mix it up a bit. Over the years, I’ve tried to teach my children that prayer is simply an ongoing conversation with God; a meaningful chat with a friend.  But sometimes we all need a few fresh things to talk about.

That’s why I wrote these easy “prayer prompts.” Each one is an open ended “starter” to get our family talking to God in an authentic way.  Today, I cut out each prompt and put the slips of paper into a coffee mug. I plan to place that mug on the table at meal times and call it “our cup of conversation.” Before we eat, each family member will draw one prompt and pray accordingly. Hopefully, the slips will spark some new ideas for prayer and add some renewed depth and honesty to our chats with our Invisible Supper Guest.

Go ahead, copy and paste these prompts, serve them up with a smile, and see if your family’s prayer life enjoys a face-lift (or better yet, a heart-lift!).
