Does Your Mommy Have a Green Thumb?

| |

My recent musings on gardening triggered a long-lost memory, and I’ve been giggling over the recollection.  If you’re digging for deep spiritual encouragement today, try another blog!  However, if you’ve ever wondered if you’re the only mother in the world who has been utterly embarrassed by her children’s tell-all habit, keep reading and remember that you’re not alone.
While I lack a  green thumb, my mother does not. Her yard produces more than spotty grass. It creates colors only found in the BIG BOX of crayons, and showcases silky petals that rival my silk pajamas!  My children love to help Grandma in her garden. From the time they could walk, my little ones have toddled about Grandma’s flower beds with their own miniature watering can and dirt crusted fingernails.

One morning years ago, three-year-old Lizzy and I were having breakfast on Grandma’s patio. As we sipped our orange juice, an elderly neighbor wandered over. The woman chatted casually until Lizzy set down her sippy cup and reached for the little watering can.  Then, the neighbor’s eyes shifted to my mom’s flower beds.

“Oh, your Grandma has the most gorgeous blooms in town!” the visitor gushed as she attempted to engage Lizzy in simple conversation. “Does your Mommy have a green thumb, too?”

Confused, Lizzy glanced at my hand, staring extra long at my thumb. Then, with a shrug she replied,
“No.  . .  But she DOES have Green Underwear!”

The poor lady nearly toppled off the patio as she fumbled for a response. Unable to concoct an appropriate comment, she finally muttered something about having clothes in the dryer (underwear, perhaps?) and bid my preschooler good-bye. Then without a backwards glance, she hurried down the sidewalk.

Once my scarlet face recovered its natural tone, I decided not to dwell on the woman’s sudden escape. For all I knew, Lizzy’s humiliating honesty had inspired the dear lady and she’d hurried home to excavate her own emerald undies. Or maybe, just maybe, she had been struck speechless simply because she was GREEN WITH ENVY.

Today’s Treasure:  He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy. -Job 8:21
