Family, Faith, and Fun Fridays: Broken To Beautiful

|
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. -Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays! As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the activity, please don’t hesitate to comment. Enjoy!

Sometimes, the best teachable moments are initiated by my own children. Over spring break, I walked by the craft room and noticed that Lizzy had rallied her little siblings’ help and together, my four youngest were digging through our huge box of crayons. One by one, they were excavating the broken pieces and placing the crayon stubs in a jar.

A few days later, I stumbled on the same crew working on the crayon-project again. Only this time, they were peeling the paper off of each broken crayon. Now the jar held naked and broken crayon pieces. Finally, on the last day of break, Lizzy asked me if she could use some muffin liners and the muffin tins. I watched as she instructed her little brother and sisters to pick out their favorite colors from the crayon stub collection and to place the broken crayolas in a muffin cup.

“Why are we using broken crayons?” Josh asked.

“Because they’re just old and don’t work so well  anymore,” Lizzy explained.

“But what are we going to do with them?” Hannah wondered.

“We’re going to make them into something new and beautiful,” Lizzy said with a smile.

The kids watched curiously as Liz slid the muffin tin of broken crayon pieces into the oven. And they clapped with delight when she pulled the pan out to reveal beautiful new rainbow crayons.

“It’s like how God takes something broken and makes something new out of it,” Lizzy pointed out while her siblings created colorful pictures with their clever new crayons.

“Yeah….” Hannah said, “New and beautiful!”

The gospel in a nutshell. Or should I say in a muffin tin?

Go ahead- gather up your kids this weekend and teach them about their Savior who can take broken people and make them beautiful! Peel a few crayon pieces, pile them into a lined muffin tin and bake the colored assortment in a 250 degree oven until they have melted into wax. Then pull the pan out and let the crayons cool. Follow up the fun with some refrigerator art in hues of the rainbow.
