Seek First: The Fingerprints of God
“I’ve been there all along.” God gently reminds us in Isaiah 46:3. If forensic scientists could detect God’s fingerprints with a simple dusting exercise, then every embryo tucked secretly in a mother’s womb would bear evidence of God’s touch. In the words of author Gary Thomas, “Even while tucked in their mothers’ bellies, God pursues our kids; he calls them to their spiritual homes before they can even speak. He zealously seeks their good, eagerly plans for their salvation, and generously gives them constant attention and oversight” (Devotions for Sacred Parenting 135).
Not only do God’s hands shape us while we are “in the secret place” (Psalm 139), but His hands carry us from the moment of conception to the grave. “I have cared for you since you were born,” our Creator reminds us in Isaiah 46:3. No other religion boasts a God who not only CREATES his children, but also WALKS with them.
What confidence this simple truth can give us as parents. We cannot be with our children at all times, but God can. Even when they are out of our reach, our treasured youngsters are safe in the hands of God. Delight today in knowing that your children’s precious lives are carried carefully by the One who created their souls. The Lord promises, “From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand.” Isaiah 43:13
Parent’s Pondering: About what do I worry when my children are “out of reach”? Turn those worries over to the Lord today. Then, read “The Rocking Chair Prayer” and thank God for having the only arms your children will never outgrow!
