When You’re Stuck in the Kitchen…

| |

Some days I feel like I never leave the kitchen.  Dishes piled high, groceries to unload, meals to prepare, and a constant stream of snack times keep me bound to the sticky linoleum floor for hours. And with my kids underfoot, a simple endeavor like making supper can turn into an Olympic-sized event.

One of my favorite ways to keep my little ones occupied while I tend to kitchen duties is “refrigerator play.” At our house, the fridge is far more than a convenient appliance for keeping our food chilled. The refrigerator is a 6-foot magnetic board just waiting to host a play party.

Yesterday, we turned the side of the fridge into a pumpkin farm.

Josh kept busy picking funny-faced pumpkins from the vines and piling the orange harvest into his big yellow truck. Then he “drove” his load to the front of the refrigerator where the big red barn awaited his delivery.

His farm truck was bulging with pumpkins and Maggie was the designated “farmer’s wife” who got to line the pumpkins up in a lovely fall display right in front of the bright red barn. Then the game began again!

Later that day, Hannah pulled out our magnetic puzzles and added a few panda bears to the farm scene.

Next time you find yourself “stuck” in the kitchen, grab a strip of magnetic tape, your favorite puzzle or some simple clip art and turn your refrigerator in a play land with immeasurable possibility!

I love the joyous faces on the pumpkins….I like halloween, because it gives a chance to be silly and fun…but I live to keep it HAPPY!
