What God’s Word Has to Say about Bedhead, according to a five-year-old expert

|

It’s not every day that a five-year-old leaves his mom speechless because of something he says.  Don’t get me wrong, my five-year-old most certainly has the ability to leave me dumbfounded now and then. I’ve been left speechless because of his stunt-dives in the grocery store; speechless because of his groovy dances that could win the rhythmless moves of the year award, and speechless because of his x-gaming bike stunts that don’t seem to match his petite and tender personality. But yesterday, my fourth-born left me speechless because of the depth of wisdom that flowed seamlessly out of his little mouth.

I was shuffling paper piles in the office yesterday before dawn when Maggie traipsed down the hall with her pink blankie in hand. Her hair was coiffed in an I-just-stuck-my-finger-in-a-light-socket-kind of style. Her stringy blonde curls that normally puffed around her cheeks were raised in a hallelujah toward heaven.  I shot my littlest one a smile and told her to go curl up in our reading chair and I’d be right there to start the day with her. Before I made it to my daughter’s side, her big brother skipped out of his room and plopped beside her in the big leather chair.

Once he’d snuggled in, he cocked his head and took a good look at his little sister. His green eyes grew large when he spied her crazy hair. I turned from my desk just in time to see him lick his fingers and try to mat down Maggie’s run-away curls. When his spit failed, he put his own spiked-from-sleep brown-haired head next to hers and said tenderly, “Mags, do you know that even when you have bed head God thinks you’re pretty?”

“No I’m not,” my obstinate three-year-old replied, reaching up to smooth her hair in a sweep of annoyance.

“God says so, Maggie,” Josh repeated resolutely. “His Word says that you are pretty on the inside because Jesus is in your heart.” He paused and sighed as if searching for the right words to convince his sister of the truth. “So, Maggie, that just makes you pretty all over!”

Maggie was uncharacteristically silent as she snuggled closer to our five-year-old bearer of good news. Her mommy, too, stood quiet and reverent. Sometimes God’s best reminders come out of the mouths of babes.  Even babes with bed head.

The Overflow:  But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. TheLORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORDlooks at the heart.”
                                                                              -I Samuel 16:7

  4. Alicia- it’s so good to meet you! I love your story and I love the heart of that little boy. I think I might need my own dose of his encouragement, as my own hair is not quite up to par this morning.

I’d love to invite you to link up with Soli Deo Gloria next Monday night. I’m sure a lot of us would be blessed by your writing. Here is the link with more info: http://findingheaventoday.blogspot.com/p/about-soli-deo-gloria.html
