Storing September (in October)

|
Tomorrow, Rob and I will trade the  gorgeous Autumn pallette beyond our window for an island landscape. We’ll exchange crunchy leaves beneath our feet for the caress of sand through our toes.
We’ll trade a household of seven for a haven for two; a cacaphony of cries and laughter for a quiet duet. We’ll swap the hum of combines in cornfields for the lap of ocean waves. Hawaii, I’m told, is a bit different than our dear Midwest home. While we are looking forward to beach strolls and island excursions, we are most excited about the simple things that our week may hold–Things like completing each sentence we begin; dining at a place that doesn’t have chicken nuggets and fries on the menu, and sleeping through the night without any crying, toilet trips, or bad dream reports. While we are approaching our unexpected vacation with few expectations, we are expectant that the Lord will meet us on the BIG ISLAND and we are hopeful that He will restore our souls as we soak in the beauty of His handiwork far from home.

Wherever the week ahead finds you, I pray that you will savor this season of granduer as God leave His fingerprints on every leaf, tree, and trail.  Blessings as you “store September” in the sweet days of October!

Storing September

You ask me what I did today.
I could pretend and say,
“I don’t remember.”

But, no, I’ll tell you what I did today:
I stored September.

 Sat in the sun
and let the sun sink in

,

Let all the warmth
 of it caress my skin.

When winter comes, my skin will still remember
The day I stored September.

And then, my eyes-
I filled them with the deepest, bluest skies
And all the traceries of wasps and butterflies.
When winter comes, my eyes will still remember
The day they stored September.
And there was cricket song to fill my ears!
And the taste of grapes
And the deep purple of them!
And asters, like small slumps of sky. ..
You know how much I love them.
That’s what I did today

And I know why.
Just simply for the
love of it,

I
stored September.
