Family Faith and Fun Fridays: Taste and See that God is Good

 

 I was trying to decide whether or not I should toss out our remaining Valentine’s Day candy when I stumbled on this simple faith lesson that I once wrote for a family devotional. I think I’ll round up all of those pieces of assorted chocolate scattered throughout the house and try this little activity again! 


How about you? Can you find a few left-over sweets? If you don’t have any resident chocolate, the clearance aisle is sure to have a cheap assortment stuffed in gaudy cardboard hearts.  Why not grab a bargain and teach your kids that God’s Word is the perfect dessert for any meal!


                      
What you need: *A variety of chocolate candy with filling inside     *A Bible 

What to do: Set out the plate of assorted chocolates and invite your children to look at them. Ask your children to tell you about the chocolate without tasting or touching it. (They may talk about the size, the smell, the color). 


Next ask, “What do you think is inside this piece of chocolate?” 
 Accept guesses, and then discuss how you can’t know for sure what is inside the chocolate without picking it up, holding it, and then tasting it.


Read Psalm 34:8 together. 


Explain: God is like this chocolate. We can’t really know what’s inside of His heart if we don’t get close to Him. He wants us to experience or TASTE His kindness and goodness. 


Ask: How can we “taste” God; in other words, what can we do to experience His heart? 
(Read His word, pray, look for Jesus at work in the world around us, etc.) 


Read all of Psalm 84 and and invite your children to point out what the Psalm teaches about God’s kindness. (For example, verse 4 says He answers prayers; verse 6 says He listens; verse 7 says He protects us…).

Wrapping it Up: End by offering each child a chocolate and encourage him/her to discover what is inside the special treat. Invite them to hold it, smell it, and taste it! 


Ask, “Now that you’ve tasted the chocolate, would you like to give one to a friend?” 


Discuss how once we “taste” the kindness of God, we want to share Him with others. 
Give each family member another chocolate to share with someone.

Conclude with a family prayer- Thank God for inviting us to know His heart. Ask the Lord to nudge your family to experience Him more so you can better understand his kindness and pass it on to others.
