Family Faith and Fun Fridays: Messy Make Overs (Why We Need God’s Word)

| |
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
-Hebrews 4:12

Welcome to Family Faith and Fun Fridays! As the week winds down and I anticipate more family time over the weekend, I often ask God for one good idea that will enable me to bring the Word to life and bring our family together. Usually, the activity overflows out of something the Lord has been teaching me through His Word during the week. I’d like to invite you to join me and my family in the adventure. Sometimes I’ll post things we’ve tried; other times I’ll post an idea in the works. If you’ve got thoughts to add or suggestions on how to adapt or improve the activity, please don’t hesitate to comment.

Messy Make-Overs: Why We Need God’s Word

Over the past few months, I’ve had the sheer joy of hosting a Bible study for Lizzy and her friends. All summer long we drew wisdom from women featured in the Word. We learned about true beauty and lasting friendship and the power of prayer.  Together, Lizzy and I have delighted in writing the lessons and brainstorming creative ways to communicate God’s truth. Of all the fun activities we’ve done, this one still reigns as favorite. On our first meeting together, I wanted to explore the “why” behind Bible study. Why do we need to know what God’s Word says? Does it really matter for our lives today? This silly activity made it clear that without the Bible as a lens for life, we can’t see clearly.

If you’re looking for a hilarious way to illustrate the importance of God’s Word, try out this messy-make-over!

First: Provide a an array of cheap make up or face paint.

Next: Pair your kids up into groups of two and have them face one another.

Then: Blindfold one of the partners and tell him/her that the goal is to “beautify” the other person’s face by applying make up. The glitch? You can’t see what you’re doing!

Finally: Remove the blindfold and take a look at the results! Snap some pictures and then provide some facial soap for a serious clean up session.

Explain: If we try to live life without God’s word, we make a mess out things. Without God’s truth, we live blinded. We can’t see what we’re doing and we struggle to do things well. Without the Bible as our lens, our eyes fail to see true beauty, true wisdom, or true purpose. God’s Word opens our eyes to see clearly. God’s Word helps us to do life well. (And it keeps us from looking foolish, like the crazy painted faces we created today!)

Wrap it up: Together, read Psalm 119:10–By your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path. I’ve committed myself and I’ll never turn back  from living by your righteous order.
